宋濂(1310-1381),字景濂,號潛溪,謚文憲,浦江(在今浙江義烏縣西北) 人。 明初著名文學家。 受業于元末古文大家吳萊、 柳貫、黃溍等, 明初主修 《元史》 , 后歷任國子司業、侍講學士,后官至翰林學士承旨,知制誥。學識淵博,工散文, 文字簡練樸素,與劉基、高啟為明初詩文三大家。宋濂很受朱元璋器重,為明代 “開國文臣之首”。平生著作很多,有《宋學士文集》 。

《送東陽馬生序》是宋濂寫于晚年的一篇勸學之作。馬生,馬君則,國子 監太學生。序,也稱作“敘”或稱作“引”,有如今日的“引言”、“前言”,是說明書 籍著述、出版意圖、編次體例和作者情況的文章。也可包括對作家作品的評論和 對有關問題的研究闡發。“序”一般寫在書籍或文章的前面,也有列在后面的,如 ,列于書后面的稱為“跋”或“后序”。贈序,古代送別以詩文 《史記太史公自序》 相贈,寫在詩文前的文字稱為贈序。贈序多為推重、贊許或勉勵之辭。本文即屬 此類。
